Position summary
This program supports primary- and secondary-aged students from refugee backgrounds. Volunteers on the program will be asked to assist in facilitating activities that support and develop:
- completion of homework
- study skills
- building self-confidence
- peer support networks
It can also involve specific one-on-one academic tutoring.

Timing
Tuesdays, Wednesday or Thursdays 3.30pm–6.30pm during school terms
Volunteers need only select one day per week but we ask for a minimum one-term commitment.

Position details
We require program assistants to:
- work on a one-to-one basis with a student to assist them with their homework (with a focus on literacy and numeracy development).
- support program staff to facilitate group activities to develop friendships, peer support and provide motivation.
- provide regular feedback to the Program Team Leader.
- general tasks for the support of the program, eg assisting with preparation of afternoon snack, cleaning and tidying up, preparation of resources/materials.
- participate in relevant training and meetings
Essential skills and/or experience
We're looking for someone who:
- has the ability to work with children and young people
- possesses adequate literacy and numeracy skills to tutor school students
- has strong interpersonal and communication skills
- is creative and engaging
- is reliable and punctual
Desired experience
Ideally you will have:
- previous experience working with children and young people
- previous experience in teaching or training, or currently undertaking BEd
- an understanding of issues affecting children and young people, especially those from CaLD/refugee backgrounds

Confirmed volunteers will be required to:
- give permission for Save the Children to undertake a National Police Record and Working With Children Check and provide 100 points of identification
- read and accept the Save the Children Volunteer Code of Conduct and Child Protection Policy
